TomeTopple Readathon Round 14 – TBR

What!?? Another round now!?! How did I miss the announcement?!?

This is my favourite readathon and for some reason I completely missing the announcement and only realised 4 days before the start! 4 days! 4 days to prep. Finding my TBR. Sorting out my schedule. Finishing my current reads. Everything had to be sorted in only 4 days!

I’m overdoing it a bit. I had finish my current read and read only one page of a new read when realising this. I actually stopped reading that book to save it for TomeTopple 😆

This readathon is a two week long readathon from the 15th March to the 28th March. It’s my favourite readathon! I’ve saved all the big books for this 😂

Reading Challenges

Wishful TBR

The Unbroken (Magic of the Lost #1) by C L Clark

Prompt: tome by an BIPOC author

I actually started this on the day I found out about this round of TomeTopple and had to stop. Considering there are only four edition on GR and vary from 440 to 544 pages it qualifies as a time. I actually not sure how many pages my e-book edition has so it could be 442 or 544 🤷‍♀️

Page count: either 442 – 544 pages (I think my edition is either 442 or 544 pages)

Synopsis:

Touraine is a soldier. Stolen as a child and raised to kill and die for the empire, her only loyalty is to her fellow conscripts. But now, her company has been sent back to her homeland to stop a rebellion, and the ties of blood may be stronger than she thought.

Luca needs a turncoat. Someone desperate enough to tiptoe the bayonet’s edge between treason and orders. Someone who can sway the rebels toward peace, while Luca focuses on what really matters: getting her uncle off her throne.

Through assassinations and massacres, in bedrooms and war rooms, Touraine and Luca will haggle over the price of a nation. But some things aren’t for sale.

The Demon King (Seven Realms Trilogy #1) by Cinda Williams China

Prompt: tome on my shelves to longest

Again this is a book I have started and then stopped. BUT I started this about two years ago during my early days on this blog and did a Try A Chapter tag and didn’t continue with it but I wanted to.

As I was looking through my shelf for something to read, it caught my eyes. I hope to get to this at some point.

Page count: 506 pages

Synopsis:

Times are hard in the mountain city of Fellsmarch. Reformed thief Han Alister will do almost anything to eke out a living for his family. The only thing of value he has is something he can’t sell—the thick silver cuffs he’s worn since birth. They’re clearly magicked—as he grows, they grow, and he’s never been able to get them off.

One day, Han and his clan friend, Dancer, confront three young wizards setting fire to the sacred mountain of Hanalea. Han takes an amulet from Micah Bayar, son of the High Wizard, to keep him from using it against them. Soon Han learns that the amulet has an evil history—it once belonged to the Demon King, the wizard who nearly destroyed the world a millennium ago. With a magical piece that powerful at stake, Han knows that the Bayars will stop at nothing to get it back.

Meanwhile, Raisa ana‘Marianna, princess heir of the Fells, has her own battles to fight. She’s just returned to court after three years of freedom in the mountains—riding, hunting, and working the famous clan markets. Raisa wants to be more than an ornament in a glittering cage. She aspires to be like Hanalea—the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. But her mother has other plans for her…

The Seven Realms tremble when the lives of Hans and Raisa collide, fanning the flames of the smoldering war between clans and wizards.

Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks

Prompt: tome from a genre I don’t normally read

I don’t read big romance books so here we are. It fits the prompt perfectly. Though I do like the easy likableness to any Nicholas Sparks story. But I know it tend to be very white with strong Christian values at the core in everything he writes. So we’ll see if that’s prominent or not.

Page count: 486 – 512 pages (I think my edition is 497 pages)

Synopsis:

At 32, Russell Green has it all: a stunning wife, a lovable six year-old daughter, a successful career as an advertising executive and an expansive home in Charlotte. He is living the dream, and his marriage to the bewitching Vivian is the center of that. But underneath the shiny surface of this perfect existence, fault lines are beginning to appear…and no one is more surprised than Russ when he finds every aspect of the life he took for granted turned upside down. In a matter of months, Russ finds himself without a job or wife, caring for his young daughter while struggling to adapt to a new and baffling reality. Throwing himself into the wilderness of single parenting, Russ embarks on a journey at once terrifying and rewarding—one that will test his abilities and his emotional resources beyond anything he ever imagined.

Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M Danforth

Prompt: from a genre I don’t normally read, seasonal colours.

It’s a gothic horror novel which I don’t have good experiences with. This could be interesting.

It just came through on the library app and it’s over 500 pages so it made it only my list of reads last minute.

Page count: 500 – 640 pages (I think my edition is 500 pages)

Synopsis

Our story begins in 1902, at The Brookhants School for Girls. Flo and Clara, two impressionable students, are obsessed with each other and with a daring young writer named Mary MacLane, the author of a scandalous bestselling memoir. To show their devotion to Mary, the girls establish their own private club and call it The Plain Bad Heroine Society. They meet in secret in a nearby apple orchard, the setting of their wildest happiness and, ultimately, of their macabre deaths. This is where their bodies are later discovered with a copy of Mary’s book splayed beside them, the victims of a swarm of stinging, angry yellow jackets. Less than five years later, The Brookhants School for Girls closes its doors forever—but not before three more people mysteriously die on the property, each in a most troubling way.

Over a century later, the now abandoned and crumbling Brookhants is back in the news when wunderkind writer, Merritt Emmons, publishes a breakout book celebrating the queer, feminist history surrounding the “haunted and cursed” Gilded-Age institution. Her bestselling book inspires a controversial horror film adaptation starring celebrity actor and lesbian it girl Harper Harper playing the ill-fated heroine Flo, opposite B-list actress and former child star Audrey Wells as Clara. But as Brookhants opens its gates once again, and our three modern heroines arrive on set to begin filming, past and present become grimly entangled—or perhaps just grimly exploited—and soon it’s impossible to tell where the curse leaves off and Hollywood begins.

Approximately 2000 pages in two weeks? Is this doable?

I do have other Tomes available if I change my mind or if I have time left… not likely.

Anyone else participating in TomeTopple this round?
