TomeTopple Readathon Round 14 – Wrapup

I got a bit distracted by Bookoplathon in the middle… 🙊

Well having only a few days to prepare for this readathon I obviously did all the planning without the mental prep. I had four books on my TBR think that is was a bit over the top but I had done it before so I could do it again.

Then Bookoplathon happened and ruined everything.. 😂

I had so much fun with Bookoplathon that I forgot all my Tometopple reads. Oh well I did manage 1.5 books for it and I got my first DNF of the year.

Reading Challenges

I’m a student 👩‍🎓

Books Read/Tried

The Unbroken (Magic of the Lost #1) by C L Clark

Prompt: tome by an BIPOC author

Page count: either 442 – 544 pages (I think my edition is either 442 or 544 pages)

Opinion: I really liked this and make a full review for it. I loved the character and the world and the magic but it wasn’t perfect and I only manage to care for Luca’s plot line but Touraine as a character. Which is weird but I’m sure I’ll get the sequel whenever that happens.

Touraine is a soldier. Stolen as a child and raised to kill and die for the empire, her only loyalty is to her fellow conscripts. But now, her company has been sent back to her homeland to stop a rebellion, and the ties of blood may be stronger than she thought.

Luca needs a turncoat. Someone desperate enough to tiptoe the bayonet’s edge between treason and orders. Someone who can sway the rebels toward peace, while Luca focuses on what really matters: getting her uncle off her throne.

Through assassinations and massacres, in bedrooms and war rooms, Touraine and Luca will haggle over the price of a nation. But some things aren’t for sale.

Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M Danforth

Prompt: from a genre I don’t normally read, seasonal colours.

Page count: 500 – 640 pages (I think my edition is 500 pages)

Opinion: firstly, this is not a bad book. I was just not in the mood. Secondly, I think it will be good in audio format as the narrator constantly breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to the reading. If I find this easily in audio (library most likely) then I’ll try again. But I was not in the mood to constantly be addressed. They permis is good and interesting. But not right now thank you.

Our story begins in 1902, at The Brookhants School for Girls. Flo and Clara, two impressionable students, are obsessed with each other and with a daring young writer named Mary MacLane, the author of a scandalous bestselling memoir. To show their devotion to Mary, the girls establish their own private club and call it The Plain Bad Heroine Society. They meet in secret in a nearby apple orchard, the setting of their wildest happiness and, ultimately, of their macabre deaths. This is where their bodies are later discovered with a copy of Mary’s book splayed beside them, the victims of a swarm of stinging, angry yellow jackets. Less than five years later, The Brookhants School for Girls closes its doors forever—but not before three more people mysteriously die on the property, each in a most troubling way.

Over a century later, the now abandoned and crumbling Brookhants is back in the news when wunderkind writer, Merritt Emmons, publishes a breakout book celebrating the queer, feminist history surrounding the “haunted and cursed” Gilded-Age institution. Her bestselling book inspires a controversial horror film adaptation starring celebrity actor and lesbian it girl Harper Harper playing the ill-fated heroine Flo, opposite B-list actress and former child star Audrey Wells as Clara. But as Brookhants opens its gates once again, and our three modern heroines arrive on set to begin filming, past and present become grimly entangled—or perhaps just grimly exploited—and soon it’s impossible to tell where the curse leaves off and Hollywood begins.

Oculta (Nocturna #2) by Maya Motayne

I started this but only made it halfway by the end of the readathon. So far it was good and I enjoyed it a lot. I hope to finish this by the end of the month… in like 2 days…

I think Bookoplathon took the energy out of me as I slowed down massively afterwards.

Approximately only managed 850 pages in two weeks but I did do 1300 pages for Bookoplathon 48h readathon in the middle so… 🤷‍♀️

Anyone else participating in TomeTopple this round?
