Review – Among Thieves M.J. Kuhn

This was my most anticipated release of 2020, which got delayed to 2021 and stayed on my most anticipated list. I’m so excited for this!! Did I regret it?

This ARC was provided to me by NetGalley in return for an honest review. Thank you.

Among Thieves

by M. J. Kuhn

A high-stakes heist novel set in a gritty world of magic and malice

In just over a year’s time, Ryia Cautella has already earned herself a reputation as the quickest, deadliest blade in the dockside city of Carrowwick—not to mention the sharpest tongue. But Ryia Cautella is not her real name.

For the past six years, a deadly secret has kept her in hiding, running from town to town, doing whatever it takes to stay one step ahead of the formidable Guildmaster—the sovereign ruler of the five kingdoms of Thamorr. No matter how far or fast she travels, his servants never fail to track her down…but even the most powerful men can be defeated.

Ryia’s path now leads directly into the heart of the Guildmaster’s stronghold, and against every instinct she has, it’s not a path she can walk alone. Forced to team up with a crew of assorted miscreants, smugglers, and thieves, Ryia must plan her next moves very carefully. If she succeeds, her freedom is won once and for all…but unfortunately for Ryia, her new allies are nearly as selfish as she is, and they all have plans of their own.

I’ve had this on my TBR for over 2 years and I had expectations. It was originally due out last year but like other books, this got delayed for a year. Finally having gotten my hand on a copy I wasn’t as excited as expected. The story was fun if not a bit stroppy. The characters were nicely fleshed out if not a bit repetitive. And the world felt small and missed information.

The story for the most part makes sense and takes logical twists and turns, but every now and then it takes a small jump. It was almost as if the author did know how the write the section and decided to jump it. For the sake of the story, it was fine but for me personally, I didn’t like it.

The world-building lacked in the edges. We are given everything we need but it still didn’t feel enough. I didn’t feel like anything was missing but still, I wanted more information about the world.

Apart from that, the world is a fascinating place and not somewhere I want to live.

Magic in here is a skill you are born with and its two options, both of which is mental ability.

Most of the characters in here had some sort of negative backstory and some trauma that made them who they are and gave them goals. But I felt that’s where it ended. Unless that was just me.

It also felt like there was a mirror in here between two groups of characters. There were traits and reasons copied in other characters throughout the story and I saw it which made me annoyed.

a little in a positive light

the writing wasn’t perfect as expected from a debut author. It was clear to me that the idea was bigger than the skill of the author. I wonder what the author will do in the future. I’ll keep my eyes on them.

All in all an enjoyable read though the story had more potential than what the book resulted being. I wanted more basically.

Have you read this? What did you think?
